Photos from the job

When an old felt flat roof has been leaking for a while, the timber deck underneath is often soft or rotten. These jobs show the old felt stripped, the deck replaced with new boards, and the roof finished in a single-piece EPDM rubber membrane.
Why the deck matters
A new membrane is only as good as the deck under it. If water has been getting through the old felt, the boards can be soft, delaminated or rotten, and laying new rubber over them just hides the problem.
The first photo shows the old covering peeled back, the joists and insulation visible, and new boards being fixed down. Only once the deck is sound does the new membrane go on.
Why EPDM
EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane laid in a single sheet on most domestic roofs, so there are no seams across the middle of the roof to fail. It stays flexible in cold weather and does not need hot works to install.
The finished photo shows the rubber dressed over the edge with neat trims. It is a good choice for extensions, garages, dormers and garden rooms.
