A roof part-stripped to the rafters with new battens and membrane, part re-covered in slate

Pitched roofing and re-roofing

Full re-roofs and new pitched roofs in slate or tile, stripped, felted, battened and re-covered to current standards.

The problem

A pitched roof that is 60 or 70 years old has usually had its nails corrode, its felt turn brittle and its mortar work go soft. Once you are replacing slates every few months, a re-roof costs less over five years than the repeat call-outs.

A re-roof is the largest job we do and the one most worth getting right. The covering you see is only part of it — the membrane, battens, ventilation and flashing detail are what decide whether the roof lasts 15 years or 50.

We will give you a fixed price with the specification written down: the exact slate or tile, the membrane, the batten gauge, and what happens to the chimney and the guttering. No day-rate surprises.

Welsh slate, Spanish slate, fibre-cement slate and concrete tile are all options and we will talk through the cost and lifespan of each for your property and budget.

What the job involves

  1. Full survey, including loft timbers, and a written specification
  2. Scaffold erected by an insured contractor
  3. Strip the old covering and remove all debris from site
  4. Replace any defective rafters, and fit new treated battens
  5. Lay breathable membrane so the roof space stays ventilated
  6. Re-cover in your chosen slate or tile, with new ridge, hip and valley details
  7. Renew lead flashings to chimneys, abutments and parapet walls
